The Dangers of Improper Blade Disposal: Martor USA has a Blade Recycle Program

In the workplace, safety knives are a standard supply most companies use daily. Materials need to be routinely cut, opened, and sliced. But when it is time to get rid of those dull, used, or broken blades, what do you do? When it’s time to dispose of your knife blades, it is essential that you take the time to get rid of them properly, or someone could get seriously hurt. Many times, those used or broken knife blades end up getting discarded in random places or tossed loose in trash cans. These practices not only pose dangerous safety risks for your employees but also for sanitation workers and the environment as well.

Improper Blade Disposal Affects People

Too frequently employees leave their used knife blades laying around their job sites (including high traffic areas like countertops and floors) or throw them away in the garbage when they are done with them. When this occurs, the risks of someone inadvertently coming in contact with used with blades and getting cut, substantially increases. These unsafe practices often happen because there are no clear, defined blade disposal stations available.

In addition to improper blade disposal creating safety concerns for your employees, sanitation workers could also hurt themselves while trying to empty your trash receptacles. If they come in contact with an exposed blade poking through the side of the bag or sticking out of the top, they could suffer a serious but preventable injury.

Improper Blade Disposal Affects the Environment

While the potential risk of people getting cuts or lacerations is an obvious concern of improper knife blade disposal, another issue revolves around how it can also negatively affect the environment. When you don’t recycle blades correctly, they can harm animals that come in contact with them, or they could get caught up in recycling equipment and cause damage.

How Martor USA’s Blade Recycling Program Can Help

Since you shouldn’t put them in the trash can, how can you dispose of knife blades safely? Fortunately, Martor USA has established an easy and convenient Blade Recycle Program that can help solve this problem.

To participate in our Blade Recycle Program, all you need to do is purchase Martor SAFE BOXES and a Martor BLADE BOX. The SAFE BOX is a small, personal blade container that allows your employees to securely store their used blades up to 2.5 inches while working. Then, to recycle, all they do is open the cover of the SAFE BOX and empty the used blades into the BLADE BOX. When the BLADE BOX is full, screw on the lid to lock it, and return it to the Martor USA recycling center. Martor takes care of the final disposal. Plus, once we receive your full BLADE BOX, we will send you back an empty replacement BLADE BOX for free for you to fill up again.

At Martor USA we created our Blade Recycling Program because we feel it is important to contribute to the “going green” effort, and we also want to help keep people and animals safe. Having appropriate safety precautions and procedures in place minimizes the dangers associated with improper blade disposal.
